This Is Not a Government Office. West Virginia Criminal History is privately operated and has no affiliation with a state or local agency. We cannot retrieve an official history, perform an official check, correct or remove a record, or receive an expungement petition. Contact the government custodian that holds the file.
Need an Official Record?
West Virginia assigns each record type to a different custodian. Use the channel that matches the document:
- Official criminal histories and rap sheets: use the authorized fingerprint-check process through the West Virginia State Police Criminal Identification Bureau and IdentoGO
- Circuit and Magistrate case files: start with the statewide criminal court case record tools, then request documents from the clerk in the filing county
- Prison or regional-jail status: use the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation offender and inmate searches
- Sex offender registry entries: use the West Virginia State Police Sex Offender Registry and direct record questions to the responsible State Police detachment
- Police and incident reports: contact the State Police, sheriff, municipal police department, or other agency that created the report
- Expungement filings: contact the Circuit Clerk in the county where the qualifying case or conviction occurred
- Local bookings, court copies, and agency records: choose the relevant local resource from the directory of all 55 West Virginia counties
There is no universal statewide records counter. The West Virginia State Police directs official fingerprint-based checks to IdentoGO and no longer performs ordinary walk-in checks at headquarters. County clerks and local agencies answer requests for the original files they maintain.
